Gerhard Richter. Paintings 1963-2007 / Living Landscapes:A Journey through German Art
National Art Museum of China
it’s so nice to see them put up the both at the same time,Gerhard Richter and Germany landscape paintings from romantism to digital age,i can see the efforts the 3 museum guys had made for this beautiful exposition.
If you don’t mind the restless face-to-face watching of gallery ladies and the non-stop digital cameras shoots ( i almost feel the need of the slogan “No photos allowded”) and the noises of 20 men drilling stones in the museum garden.or you can better intergrate them as part of the exposition,as an extreme hyper-art experience (the reality much more fictional and surreal then any art objects in the
museum),that you can feel and see anywhere of the city.
so this is not the real point i would like to mention:
Gerhard Richter is such a incredible painter, actually he broadened the ideas of what landscape painting could be.i especially noticed that in his grey serie work : Gelb 348-3 und Gelb 365-3 (2 of his total grey paintings) ,they both had a wave like surface texture, but 365-3 seems more regular and softer,it is “normalized” so even the texture looked like random,i had the feeling of watching the sea highabove from the sky, when the focus is moving around the paiting, there is an enormous interior space to explore though there is effectly nothing to see,it is of great scale.but the random, unregular, more or less violent surface of Gelb348-3 (they are of the very same size and color) attract our attention at the first sight,it is relatively unpredictable, and immediately i lose the intention to find rules or “texture motive” of it. when i move my eyes around the surface , i can’t anticipate to see anything i can catch or analyse ,so i had the feeling that the painting surface become very difficult to go through ,cause it is against direct reading and the first impression is unable to memorized, in a way i am no more high above of the sea, instead i lost my way in the primeval forest ,even though i am on a relative higher position, say it on the top of a mountain ,i stucked and find no way out,a real interesting experience.
